Possibly even more useless than the Is it 2.0? site I wrote up earlier today is Pilkipedia, which I found via MetaFilter--so I had to give it a shout-out. You see, when I was putting together the Five Podcasts Worth Downloading section of PC Mag's Our Favorite Blogs story, I couldn't help but shed a tear for my favorite departed podcast, "The Ricky Gervais Show."
Gervais is, of course, the star of the British version of "The Office," and the equally brilliant series "Extras." From 2005 to 2006, the actor hosted a popular (and ridiculously hilarious) podcast, alongside his "Office" and "Extras" co-creator Stephen Merchant. The truly remarkable thing about the show, however, was the fact that Merchant and Gervais played straight men to a third, previously unknown co-host, Karl Pilkington.
Pilkington, who had served as the producer for the show's first incarnation on British radio station XFM, was largely defined by his round, "orange-shaped" head, and the large pool of nonsensical information that it produced. He hosted a current events segment entitled "Monkey News" (which, incidentally, largely followed the fictional exploits of chimps) and allowed his rambling diary to be read aloud to comedic effect.
His offhand utterance, "I could eat a knob at night," became the subject of graffiti tags and club dance remixes.
Many have hypothesized that Pilkington is a comic genius on a par with Andy Kaufman--but Merchant and Gervais insist that he is, in fact, just that stupid.
As yet another sign that the wiki phenomenon has gone much too far, users have launched the Pikipedia, a site devoted to Pilkington's hilariously inane life. Downloads of episodes are available via the site.
I dare you not to fall for the orange-headed twit.
