Akismet Stops Blog Comment-Spam Cold

Bloggers: Remember when you were excited to receive blog comments? When you had them e-mailed to you when they were posted, and you trusted your blogging software just to post the comment when someone made it? Those days are long gone, thanks to the very irritating and often offensive comment spam that makes its way onto most blogs these days. Rather than turn comments off entirely to avoid spam or have to hand-filter your comments one by one, try Akismet. Akismet is probably one of the best comment spam killers available, and it's completely free.

Akismet comes with a personal endorsement: The moment I installed it on my personal blogs, the amount of comment spam I received dropped impressively. Instead of scrolling through pages of comments offering me everything from foreign brides to medications for intimate medical conditions, I was spending more time approving real comments entered by real people and encouraging discussion on my blogs.

The beauty of Akismet is that it's essentially fire-and-forget; it learns from the spam experiences of the rest of the Akismet community and updates itself. When you install the plug-in to your blog or Web site, it immediately makes itself current with the global zeitgeist of spam comment authors, titles, styles, and IPs, and goes straight to work on your unfiltered comments. Akismet filters automatically, and if a comment slips by and you manually flag it as spam, the service learns and adapts itself. As you use it, more and more data is sent back to Akismet's developers, which in turn help them improve the database and tweak future releases to be even more effective.

Akismet is free for personal use, and compatible with just about any popular blogging platform. The application was written for WordPress, but it also works with Movable Type, Drupal, phpBB, PostNuke, Joomla, and more, and an API is freely available. If you're a professional blogger and your blogs are sources of income for you, you can partner with Akismet for enterprise solutions.

One look at the Akistmet homepage tells you how effective the service it is. The ticker is going up, but at last check the service had caught nearly 3.5 billion spam comments. Since the developers started keeping track, over 92 percent of all comments that have passed through Akismet are spam; that's bad for the Web but a very good recommendation for Akismet.
