The rush to push offline apps online is quickly being eclipsed by another hot-button issue--the race to move those same online apps offline. At the tail end of May, Google announced Gears, its attempt to help user access such Web apps as Google Docs and Spreadsheet, even though their Internet connections were unreliable--or non-existent. In August, Web office-suite designer Zoho adopted Google's Gears technology to bring its software offline--beating even Google to the punch on that front.
On Sunday, Microsoft launched Sync Framework, which seems to share some key goals with Google Gears. According to Download Squad, the app will enable "collaboration and offline scenarios for applications, services and devices." Yep, sounds Gears-like to me.
It will be interesting to see how the app performs with the Microsoft Windows Live suite, MS's own effort to bring more desktop programs online.
