The latest incarnation of RealPlayer went live yesterday, after a five-month beta period. Moving away from its long-time focus on streaming video, the newest version of the player is focusing itself as "the first mainstream media player that lets consumers download and record video from thousands of Web sites [i.e., YouTube, et al.]," videos that play well with portable media players such as the new iPods.
The new RealPlayer offers a "one-click download" feature. The "Share With a Friend" feature lets users e-mail video links to one another. Users can also download multiple videos simultaneously and begin a download while watching a video (PC only).
The player is now available in beta for the Apple OS, and the company will be releasing the player in nine additional languages at the end of the month.
The app is available now as a free download--those who want iPod transfer functionality will have to pony up a one-time fee of $39.99.
