Monitor Free Disk Space with Vista Drive Icons

Some of the most useful features in Windows Vista get overshadowed by the flashiness of the rest of the operating system. Take the OS's visual cue for drive space, displaying a bar directly underneath the icon for the hard drive. With a single glance, you can tell if your drive is empty, starting to fill up, or it's time to back up your data. With Vista Drive Icons, you can get the same functionality in older versions of Windows.

Vista Drive Icons is completely free and works with Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, and XP. The developer doesn't say it explicitly, but if it works with Windows 95 and 98, it probably works with Windows ME as well (if anyone still has it).

The download is less than 1MB, and the app itself leaves a pretty small system footprint. Installing it doesn't even require a reboot--you'll see your new icons immediately. The progress bars are blue until the drive gets dangerously full, and when your hard drive starts to get too cluttered, the bar turns red. The app only works for local hard drives, so don't expect your network shares to get new icons, but at least Vista Drive Icons saves you having to right-click on your hard drive and look at the properties.
