I love my local radio stations; there's always something entertaining to listen to. But when I travel, I often find myself in places where there's nothing worthwhile to listen to--so I turn to Internet radio. With Virtenna Radio, I can travel far and wide and still listen to the radio stations I know and love here in the nation's capital. Similarly, if you're curious to hear what people in cities such as New York, Shanghai, San Francisco, or Tokyo are listening to, you can use Virtenna Radio to find out.
I generally listen to my local NPR station on the way to the office, but I can't always remember where to find the station's Web audio stream. That means that when I leave my car and head into the building, I can't listen. Virtenna Radio fixes that problem. The service seemed to know that I live near Washington DC, and automatically loaded up DC radio stations in the embedded player. Virtenna isn't limited to talk radio or public stations, either; I found several commercial radio stations playing jazz, top 40, alternative, hip-hop, and more in my area that were streaming at Virtenna Radio for free.
Virtenna Radio offers streams from stations around the world, with listings for stations in Shanghai, Tokyo, London, Bejing, and more. Using Virtenna Radio, I can tune in to some of my favorite shows on stations such as KUSF in San Francisco instead of waiting for podcasts after the show has aired. And it's cool to get an idea of what people in China or Japan are listening to, even if I can't understand what's being said.
Virtenna Radio is a fun way to travel across the country or around the world listening to what people in different places tune in to every day. The service isn't affiliated with any of the listed stations, although several of them partner with Virtenna to have their sites listed. It appears that the service scrubs popular radio stations in various major cities for available streams, and adds them to the Virtenna player. Either way, the list of stations for each city is impressive, and there's plenty of material to explore.
