Wikipedia and iCommons hosted a party together in San Francisco Friday night to announce a joint venture between Wikimedia, Creative Commons, and the Free Software Foundation. This will make Wikipedia's current license compatible with that of non-profit licensing organization Creative Commons.
"[T]his is not, as some people speculated on Facebook, my 58th birthday party," Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales joked in his speech at the event (which is transcribed in its entirety at the Jamendo Blog). "This is the party to celebrate the liberation of Wikipedia."
The changes to the license mean, among other things, that users are now free to mix Wikipedia and CC content. Jamendo elaborates in the aforementioned post, stating, "[Wikipedia] made a deal allowing the community to relicense the content of the wikis under a BY-SA license. So it's now up to the Wikipedians to choose whether they do or not."
